Target Australia, Nationwide
Project Name:
Entertainment Department update
Address:Target Australia National
Project Category:
Nationwide Store Refit. To roll out across Australia.
Project Specifics:
Retail Fit-out – Sound department
Design Practice:
Target Australia
Time Schedule:First role out of 35 stores pre Christmas 2009.
Design Statement:
To improve customer service and customer interaction with the product. To improve OHS issues with current counters. Issues include constant bending over to low level drawers for games library. To improve asset protection and usability of glass display cabinets.
The design of the counters had to accomodate the different applications Target planned to install. The design of each store component remains the same but the number of different components and quantities changes.
Target has three main types of installation.
Flagship; Which is, as the name suggests, Target’s top trading stores. The fit out includes the rear counter, double sided glass cases, a library drawer system, storage cupboard, tiered display with live samples and access to a rear storage room, where possible. All units are constructed new.
Major refit; This imitates the flagship install but uses existing fixtures already in the store. Some of these stores may receive the retro-fit tiered display. All these stores will have new rear counters, double sided glass cases and library drawer system. Again, where possible, a rear storage room will be installed.
Minor refit; This is the most common installation to be rolled out. It involves increasing the size of the existing counter by using double sided glass cases to the perimeter of a staff only area. Within this area are a library drawer system and stock trolley lock up.
The Dialock system also allowed Target to alarm all cabinets with different time settings. We have on the staff side a longer opening time to allow staff to stock cabinets whilst on the customer side this time is greatly reduced to prevent customer side cabinets being left open.
Project Scope:
Double sided glass display case.
Target already uses a display case system that is not compatable with the Häfele Labora track lock. So a design was required to incorporate the standard FLC lock. This was achieved by the use of adjustable brackets fitted to the rails of the door and the locks being mounted on a rail below the doors. The reader was mounted on an acrylic bracket tight under the glass top. The doors on the front and rear of the cabinet were connected to seperate DFT terminals to allow staff to only open the side of the cabinet where they are standing. The other innovation is that multiple cabinets are connected together using one DFT terminal to open all doors on all cabinets on the side that the staff member wanted to open.
Library system:
Target developed a new 20 drawer library unit located in the centre of a staff only area located behind the registers. This system is controlled by a single DFT unit with the reader mounted to the centre of the counter top to allow easy access from all points. The locks were mounted behind the drawers to keep them away from view. The individual drawer units have a recess to the rear for all cables to drop down to the kicker space. The rear kickers then have a hole in the sides to pass all cables to one kicker. The front of the kicker is then removed for access to the DFT unit and alarm buzzer.
Rear Counter:
The rear counter serves many purposes. A process area for reps, storage area for admin and other items and storage area for stock trolleys. Target developed the stock trolley area to have a Dialock secured door to each bay. The trolleys slide into the bay and the saloon type door closes behind it to secure the trolley.
Tiered display unit:
The tiered display unit is positioned at the front of the service counter. It has dialock FLC’s fitted to the storage cupboards on the staff side. The reader is mounted on a rail facing the staff along with an alarm buzzer.
Reserve lock-up door.
To improve staff efficiency, a new door has been introduced to a secured storage room behind the counter, this door is also controlled by Dialock allowing easy access to staff, using the same key used for the counters and Library. This door is also alarmed to ensure staff don’t leave the door open. And the door can’t be tampered with without warning.
