System-based Specifications and Division 1

Drew Clausen, CSI, from Owens Corning will lead a discussion on systems-based specifications, and how multiple manufacturers can work in partnership.

The CavityCompleteTM  wall system will be used as an example. It was produced by five leading product manufacturers working cooperatively (each contributing their individual products) to create a wall system. The products include Owens Corning insulations (fiber glass, extruded polystyrene board and mineral wool), Tremco air/water barriers, Mortar Net Solutions mortar droppings protection and flashing, Heckmann masonry anchors, and Rodenhouse fasteners and air/water sealing washers.

The wall system is provided with a single source limited warranty by the cooperating group of manufacturers and is specified in Division 1 as an integrated system under “Exterior Envelope Performance Requirements”. Drew will discuss how the Division 1 spec interfaces with Divisions 4 and 7, the impact of possible substitutions, warrantee logistics, and the advantages of using a systems-based specification for facility shell performance.

Learning Objectives

•       Demonstrate the logistics of a single source limited warranty offered by multiple manufacturers
•       Describe the Division 1 interface with Divisions 4 and 7 and the impact of substitutions
•       Evaluate a system based specification in terms of advantages for envelope performance
•       Describe the risk management and efficiency advantages of specifying a system versus individual product components
