Wood Species Guidelines

The infinite variety in color, grain, and texture is what gives wood its rich character and natural warmth. And along with all the differences among varying wood species, even within the same species, no two trees are alike. Climate, light, rainfall, and minerals in the soil all create diverse and unique grain and color patterns in each piece of wood. Because of all of the variables and options available in choosing a wood species, we’ve prepared the guidelines below to assist you in selecting the right Maple for the desired end result.

Natural Hard Maple
Available in 1/2” thicknesses, unfinished or with a finish applied after assembly, and a bullnose top edge detail. The material will vary in color, ranging from medium to a darker brown with some dark knots visible and may include mineral streaks. Glue ups can occur in 2 and 3 inch increments and are not color or grain matched.

Prefinished Natural Hard Maple
Available in 5/8” thicknesses prefinished with a UV coat and a bullnose top edge detail. The material will vary in color, ranging from medium to a darker brown, with some dark knots visible and may include mineral streaks. Glue ups can occur in 2 and 3 inch increments and are not color or grain matched. When dovetailed, the end grain of the dovetail is waxed to seal and finish.

Pacific Coast Maple
Available in 1/2” thicknesses, unfinished or with a finish applied after assembly, and a bullnose top edge detail. The material will have a pinkish color to it, similar to Alder, and is color consistent. Glue ups can occur in 2 and 3 inch increments and are not color or grain matched.

Soft Maple
Available in 1/2” thicknesses, unfinished or with a finish applied after assembly, and a bullnose top edge detail. The material will vary in color due to seasonal variations, ranging from light and clear to darker brown. There will be mineral streaks, particularly during the fall and winter months. Glue ups can occur in 2 and 3 inch increments and are not color or grain matched.

Select White Hard Maple
Available in 1/2” thicknesses, unfinished or with a finish applied after assembly, and a bullnose top edge detail. This material is selected for all white color and will be consistent. Glue ups can occur in 2 and 3 inch increments and are not grain matched but are color matched.

Soft Prefinished Maple
Available in 1/2” thickness prefinished with a UV coat with a bullnose top edge. The material will vary in color, ranging from light and clear to darker brown. There may be mineral streaks, particularly during the fall and winter months. Glue ups can occur in 2 and 3 inch increments and are not color or grain matched. Material is finished with an Ultra Violet Cured finish prior to machining and assembly. When dovetailed, the end grain of the dovetail is waxed to seal and finish.

Prefinished Baltic Birch Plywood
A 12 mm 9 ply prefinished Baltic Birch plywood with a UV coat and a bullnose clear foil top edge detail. This wood has a smooth, dense surface free from pores. Grain is straight, close and has a fine texture. Can have wood patches. When dovetailed, the end grain of the dovetail is waxed to seal and finish.

Unfinished Baltic Birch Plywood
A 12 mm 9 ply unfinished Baltic Birch plywood with a bullnose top edge detail. This wood has a smooth, dense surface free from pores. Grain is straight, close and has a fine texture. Can have wood patches.

Prefinished 7 Ply Maple Plywood
A 1/2” thickness 7 Ply prefinished Maple Plywood with a UV coat and a PVC tape top edge detail. Only available in doweled construction. The wood has a close fine, uniform texture and is generally straight-grained.

Prefinished 9 Ply Maple Plywood
A 1/2” thickness 9 Ply prefinished Maple Plywood with a UV coat and a bullnose clear foil top edge detail. Only available in dovetailed
construction. The wood has a close fine, uniform texture and is generally straight-grained. When dovetailed, the end grain of the dovetails is
waxed to seal and finish.

Melamine PB Core
A 1/2” thickness Melamine with a PB (particle board) core available in two colors: White and Hard Rock Maple. Available in doweled corner
construction only with a PVC tape top edge detail.

Aromatic Cedar
Available in 1/2” thickness with a bullnose top edge detail. Aromatic Eastern Red Cedar has creamy white sapwood and light reddish or purplish heartwood that age to a darker red or reddish brown. Often contains numerous knots. Finishing is not recommended.
